CONCERT REVIEW: HUGO MOLTO MEDINA (SPAIN)
MARCH 11, 2015 - WINTER PALACE GALLERY
Mr. Molto delivered a world-class performance of a very eclectic and difficult recital program. Playing with the musical maturity of a 30-year veteran artist, it was difficult to believe that Hugo is actually only 20. His performance of Bach's 5th Cello Suite was the highlight of the evening. The phrasing was long, rich, and without the usual guitar mannerisms that come with Bach transcriptions. Henze's Royal Winter Music is a difficult sell for even the most avid classical guitar connoisseurs and Hugo managed to engage the audience with this piece as a closer to the second half. We were lucky to have witnessed this rising star in between two very important American debuts, his Carnegie Hall performance last season and his performance for the Miami Classical Guitar Society. There's no doubt in my mind that within the next five years, everyone will know Hugo Molto Medina.
